Apple to begin selling wireless charging AirPods case

One of the more under-the-radar details that Apple didn’t really talk about was that the AirPods’ case will now be able to wirelessly charge. It was a minute detail that was only shown off when Apple announced AirPower. The new case will use inductive charging via the Qi standard.

That’s a convenient ability and one that will also be available to current AirPods owners. According to sources from Apple Switzerland, Apple will start selling the new case for $69 in December.

The pricing falls in line with what Apple has been charging for replacement AirPods parts. Right now, if you happen to lose a single AirPod and need a replacement, Apple will happily provide it for $69. An out of warranty replacement for a regular AirPods case is also $69. It’s nice to see Apple keep the same pricing, rather than charge a premium for the wireless charging option.

Apple also made a slight design improvement to the case by putting the charging LED outside rather than inside. It’s a slight inconvenience that has now been addressed.

The report didn’t specify an exact date when the charging case will release in December. We should find out more information as the date nears.
