Apple and Qualcomm aren’t on the best of terms due to an ongoing legal battle. So, it comes as no surprise that Qualcomm has thrown some major shade at Apple ahead of the unveiling of the iPhone X by claiming all of the tech used by Apple was featured in Android devices first.
The shot at Apple comes in the form of a blogpost that highlights the major tech that Android devices first debuted. It’s pretty much just Qualcomm taking a dig at Apple for being slow to embrace the OLED panel, edge-to-edge display and wireless charging with its newest iPhone X.
Qualcomm never once mentions Apple by name in the post, but it’s clear which company Qualcomm is talking about. It’s an amusing breakdown, but one that has a lot of errors. And they’re lazy errors a simple Google search would have greatly remedied.
Among the errors spotted are claims the HTC One M7 sported a dual camera (it didn’t), the yet-to-be-released V30 is the first to use Bluetooth 5 (S8 and Note 8 already use it) and the LG Flex 2 was the first device to sport an OLED display—this is Samsung’s specialty.
But the most egregious inclusion was probably the “Qualcomm Reference Design Headset” for Depth Sensing via Structured Light and Fingerprint under Display. Qualcomm may be working on the tech for those sectors, but no consumer has possessed it in a working handset, so I’m not sure how it can call a prototype as a claim to fame.
The funny part about this is that Apple is upfront about being slow to embrace technology, opting instead to get tech right rather than to be the first company to use it in a device. Apple waited it out with fingerprint scanners and dual cameras (among others), and those features worked well in its devices. The same cannot be said of the first Android devices to use those technologies.
Qualcomm is just doing this to get a rise out of Apple, but the real battle is still ongoing in the court room. Apple will ignore it and take the stage tomorrow to unveil arguably the most anticipated iPhone ever, and TechnoBuffalo will bring you complete coverage.
