Leonardo DiCaprio eyed for Joker role in standalone film

Warner Bros. reportedly has Leonardo DiCaprio, one of Hollywood’s eminent talents, in its sights to play the lead role in the upcoming Joker standalone. The studio apparently hopes to lure him to the DC project with the help of Martin Scorsese, who the studio is trying to nail down as producer.

Nothing is set in stone just yet—Scorsese’s deal reportedly isn’t finished, and no other actors have been named as possible alternatives. But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is doing everything in its power to attract the pair to a project nobody asked for.

Remember, this new standalone Joker film will be separate from the DC Extended Universe, which includes Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League.

Jared Leto was the latest actor to play the Clown Prince of Crime, but reception to his portrayal was met with mixed reviews. He’s slated to play Joker in the Suicide Squad sequel and Gotham City Sirens. At least, that’s the plan.

The Hollywood Reporter claims Leto isn’t happy with the notion of there being two different actors playing the role. Not only does it undermine his ability to play the role, but it could potentially confuse audiences.

That being said, DiCaprio is one of Hollywood’s most talented actors, so it would be interesting to see him do something different. If not DiCaprio, Warner Bros. reportedly wants an A-list actor to play the character in a film that’s described as a gritty crime boss thriller “in a Scorsese-esque Gotham underworld.”
