Last week, Google began rolling out the Android Oreo update for Pixel devices. That was nice for people who got the phone unlocked, but what about those who got the phone through Verizon?
Normally it would be weeks, if not months, before users would see the update pass through carrier certification, but in a welcome turn of events, Verizon is already rolling out the update to Pixel and Pixel XL devices. This almost never happens, as carriers have a lurid reputation of being slow with big Android updates.
The news does fall in line with Verizon’s grandiose statement last year that Pixel updates would arrive as fast as the iPhone. So far, it is being true to its word.
We’re not sure if this convenience will apply to every phone that will receive the Android Oreo update, but we’re not holding our breathe. With Google streamlining the production and software of the Pixel, this may have led to fewer steps being needed for major updates to be rolled out.
This likely won’t be the case for other smartphones from Samsung and LG. It’s unfortunate that this is still an issue after all these years, but that’s the way it is for Android devices.
