Nest launches a new, more affordable thermostat

Nest has announced the newest product in its thermostat line, the Nest Thermostat E, and it’s going to be a lot friendlier to your wallet.

Nest thermostats are well-known for being energy savers, but ever since its original model launched in 2011, the biggest complaint has been the price to even try it in your home. Now, with the Nest Thermostat E, and a price of just $169, the company has made it far easier to give it a try.

“In 2011, we reinvented the thermostat category to make it easy for people to save energy,” said Matt Rogers, co-founder and chief product officer, Nest. ”Fast forward six years: Nest owners have saved more than 14 billion kWh — the equivalent of providing electricity to all the homes in New York State for over 100 days — and now we are bringing beautiful design and proven energy saving capabilities into even more homes. To do that, we needed to simplify. The more subtle look and feel of the Nest Thermostat E will seamlessly blend into any environment. It’s everything our customers have come to know and love from Nest thermostats with a renewed focus on user simplicity and control.”

The biggest difference with the new Nest is the design. The metal ring has been replaced with a white exterior ring, while the display has been changed to frosted glass. This new display will let light out, but not in, so when the thermostat has nothing to display it will blend into your wall.

Beyond the design, it sounds like pretty much everything is there from Alexa connectivity to knowing to change the settings when no one is home.

The Nest Thermostat E is available now from as well as other major retailers.
