Take a hike, Final Fantasy VII. This is where the real action is! Square Enix has confirmed that its beloved Super Nintendo classic Secret of Mana will be getting a full-fledged remake for the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Steam next year.

And, to graciously spare us the anxiety, the remake is also confirmed for a North American release on Feb. 15, 2018. You’ll be playing this within a year. unlike Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Square Enix is remaking the classic in celebration of the Seiken Densetsu series’ 25th anniversary. The company already put out a bundle in Japan for the Switch with all three original games, but that is not likely to make the leap across the Pacific Ocean thanks to Square Enix’s reluctance to localize Seiken Densetsu III into English.

Consider this a replacement. Part of me would rather have access to a legit Seiken Densetsu III translation and both Final Fantasy Adventure and Secret of Mana on the Switch, but the remake looks solid at least.

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 25, 2017) – SQUARE ENIX® completely revamps the classic Secret of Mana® title with high-definition 3D graphics and voice-over for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, and STEAM®. Scheduled for global digital release next February 15, the beloved volume in the MANA series retains its long-held charm while incorporating improvements such as upgraded gameplay for modern platforms and a newly arranged musical score.

Originally released in 1993, Secret of Mana faithfully tells the story of Randi, Primm and Popoi as they battle a treacherous empire in order to reclaim the power of Mana and bring the world back to order.

Those who preorder from the PlayStation®Store will receive special character costumes: “Moogle Suit” for Randi, Primm and Popoi, “Tiger Two-Piece” for Primm and “Tiger Suit” for Randi and Popoi, as well as three PlayStation™Network avatars. Those who pre-purchase the game, or purchase the Day 1 Edition within one week of the launch on STEAM, will receive the three costumes as well as a downloadable wallpaper. Square Enix’s graphical output is obviously inspired by its recent remake Adventures of Mana, which was a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure, on PS Vita and mobile. I won’t say it looks perfect, but I’ll happily give it a shot.

Still, there ain’t nothing like the real thing. In addition to the Switch, Secret of Mana also has a quality port on iOS and Android, and it is also included on SNES Classic Edition… if you’re able to get one. If playing the remake is your introduction to this beloved classic, do yourself a favor and fire up the old game as well. People still love it all these years later for a year, broken story, glitches, and all.
