A lot of what stuntmen and women do in movies and TV is taking falls, big car crashes, and stuff like that. But more and more, precision stunt work is becoming necessary thanks to shows like Daredevil and Arrow and movie characters like Marvel’s Black Widow. These characters are supposed to be skilled martial artists with years of training. As the viewing audience becomes more and more discerning, though, we get better at telling when shows are faking it.
And so we have stuntwomen like the two in this video, Lauren Mary Kim and Amy Johnston.
You’ve seen both at work, you just might not know it. Johnston is one of Scarlett Johansson’s stunt doubles in the Avengers movies, while Kim doubles for Elektra in Daredevil. In this video, the two go at it with stunt knives and Jeet Kune Do, the martial art created by Bruce Lee.
As soon as the two dive in, it’s easy to see just what a difference a good stunt person can make. Despite not knowing either of these actresses or having any investment in their characters, the fight already feels more intense and has higher stakes than anything Iron Fist was able to manifest. I know I keep dumping on Iron Fist, but it was asking for it.
If you dig this, check out Kim’s channel for more battles – it’s stuntmen and women like Kim that are making our favorite movies and shows as exhilarating as they are.
