Yakuza 2 has always seemed like the first game where SEGA got the popular franchise right. The first game is a solid one, but not until the second game did SEGA start to focus on what made the series unique and fun. Mini-games, over the top cutscenes, free roaming through Japan’s cities, bloody combat. This is the first game that blended them all together.
It is also the next game that will get the Kiwami HD remake treatment, as leaked by the PlayStation Store in Taiwan. A listing for the game appeared overnight, announcing the game before SEGA got the chance to officially do so.
Home sweet home
Yakuza 2 is the only game in the series that I really dove into, and that is thanks to the familiarity of the setting. Where as most games take place in Tokyo or excotic locations like Okinawa, Yakuza 2 takes place in Osaka. All of the locations in the game are a thirty-minute train ride from my house, and it’s fun to see how freakishly accurate these games are with their recreation of the neighborhoods.
Look out for a PlayStation 4 announcement from SEGA in the coming days… or hours…
Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the first game, launches next week on Aug. 29 in North America for the PlayStation 4.
