I never, ever thought a Blade Runner sequel would be a thing, but here we are: Blade Runner 2049 comes out in October. Today we have a new trailer that gives us a few morsels of story to chew on.
Previous trailers suggested that Jared Leto was the main antagonist in the story, and this trailer seems to confirm it. His exact aim is still a bit foggy, but it seems like maybe replacing humanity with replicants is on his list.
Director Denis Villeneueve told Slashfilm that he wants to keep the tone and pace of the original Blade Runner, maintaining the “nostalgic feeling of loneliness and existential doubt.” He said that keeping the original film-noir aesthetic alive was important, though the rhythm will more closely match that of today’s movies. Villenueve said that he took the movie because “they will do it. No matter what we think, the studio will move forward and will make it. I don’t know if I’ll succeed, but I know I will give it all my love and my skills.”
“I will work so hard. I don’t want it to fall into the hands of someone that wouldn’t. At least then I can only blame myself.”
Whether a remake or a sequel or a reboot, a cult classic like Blade Runner comes with tons of pressure, and you can see it there in Villenueve’s words. Every trailer has been gorgeous, though, and what we’ve seen so far really feels like it’s set in that Blade Runner world, with all the dust, rain, and neon we expect.
Blade Runner 2049 arrives in theaters on October 6, 2017.
