I don’t know about you, but I’m really excited to dive back into the gorgeous world of Ni no Kuni. The sequel is due next year, after a delay, and Bandai Namco has released a new trailer and batch of screenshots from the Level-5 title in time for Gamescom in Europe.
We’ll start with the trailer, packed with rhetorical questions, gameplay, combat, cut scenes and a sniff at the new characters we’ll enjoy this time around.
For the first Ni no Kuni, Level-5 worked with Studio Ghibli (the makers of movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) to develop the game’s unique art style. For Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Level-5 isn’t working with Ghibli. They did bring along Character Designer Yoshiyuki Momose, though. Momose worked for Ghibli on the original game.
The result? This is another beautiful effort, and it absolutely retains that signature look that got me so excited for the original.
I will say that the combat in the first Ni no Kuni wore on me as the game rolled on. If they can make that better in Revenant Kingdom, I’ll be extremely excited.
We’ll know early next year. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is due for both the PC and PlayStation 4 on January 19, 2018. Stay tuned for more on the game.
