OnePlus has confirmed the last major software up for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will be Android O, a mere 14 months since debuting last year.
The news was broken by OnePlus in a forum for its devices. The OnePlus 3 debuted in June 2016 while the OnePlus 3T was a minor mid-year update released in November, meaning software updates for the devices only lasted a year and a half. That’s really disappointing if you picked up one of these phones. OnePlus prides itself on providing the best experience for its customers but this move fails them miserably.
Here is OnePlus’ full comments:
Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates. After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we’ll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5.
OnePlus seems to be shifting the focus of its efforts towards its newer flagship, the OnePlus 5. That’s understandable, but to cut off major upgrades (other than security patches) to a major smartphone that was released less than a year ago is a major letdown. It will put customers’ trust in the company to the test and make them reconsider whether at all to buy its newest flagships and possibly risk losing major updates within two years.
