Star Wars: The Last Jedi—New Luke Skywalker details reveal why he’s in exile

At the end of The Force Awakens, when Rey arrives at Ahch-To unannounced, Luke Skywalker doesn’t look happy to see her. Now, thanks to new details revealed by Entertainment Weekly, we know why Luke has exiled himself to the distant planet, and why he may be done with the Jedi for good.

The main thing is that Luke won’t be the chipper, optimistic person we saw at the end of Return of the Jedi. In the 30 years since defeating the Empire, Luke has been through a lot, but it was his failure to recognize the darkness in Ben Solo (aka Kylo Ren) that led to his exile.

“[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character,” actor Mark Hamill told EW. “And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. That’s the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi order, you know?”

Much of The Last Jedi will deal with Luke’s acceptance of Rey and him confronting his failures as a mentor to Ben. Hopefully, we’ll also find out what made Ben succumb to the Dark Side in the first place.

We’ll also see how Rey handles Luke’s tepid reception of her and the fallout from Han Solo’s death.

“Oh my God, this other man that I lost within a couple days was somewhat of a father figure,” actor Daisy Ridley explained. “Now he’s gone, and instead I’m with this grumpy guy on an island who doesn’t want me here.”

Judging by the most recent trailer for The Last Jedi, Rey does undergo some form of Jedi training. Whether Luke fully accepts her and confronts his past demons remains to be seen.

“Life is imperfect and without conflict there is no drama,” Hamill said. “Believe me, you’re going to see a lot of conflict in The Last Jedi. That is for sure.”
