Brawlout is a really neat game that’s been making the rounds as a Steam Early Access title for a while now. It’s also what some would call a “Smash Clone,” taking elements directly from Nintendo and HAL’s famous brawler and repurposing them in almost an identical manner.
If you hate clones, then this game won’t be for you. If you don’t mind them, then this thing actually looks pretty cool.
Two major things were recently announced. First, the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. It will be the most Smash-like think on the platform so far, potentially serving a crowd of hungry fans ahead of whenever Nintendo makes a new Smash or brings its most recent version up as a Deluxe version.
The other bit of news is super promising. The main character from Hyper Light Drifter has joined the fray of characters and will be in the Nintendo Switch version as well. Here he is battling it out in a new trailer.
What’s promising about this? I’m hoping the Drifter is the first of many indie game characters to join the lineup. What about Shovel Knight? Shantae? Meat Boy? You catch my drift? Brawlout’s roster could represent the indie crowd really, really well.
This title is also due for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but a release window for those platforms hasn’t been announced.
