Not all of my memories of Sonic the Hedgehog are happy ones. As a kid, I got swept up into a bit of a nasty competitive streak, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s competitive mode certainly didn’t help all that much. Because not only is Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s competitive mode about racing, it’s also about playing the game.
Sometimes, I wanted to exploit the Casino Night Zone’s slot machines, and other times, I just wanted to be a griefer and ruin my opponent’s ability to enjoy them. Plus, I have a younger cousin who was terrified to play in the Mystic Cave Zone, so naturally, that’s the one I picked every time just to get a rise out of him.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s competitive multiplayer really brings out the worst in people.
And it’s back! Sonic Mania is here to show off the first bit of footage of this long lost feature in Sonic the Hedgehog games.
Looks good! I just hope I have the maturity to handle it these days.
Sonic Mania will be released next week, Aug. 15, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
