Zelda patch on Switch lets players earn in-game items by reading news posts

This is pretty weird.

Nintendo’s patched The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the World up to version 1.3.1. There are some patch notes that detail the full list of changes, and we’ve included them at the base of this post.

The real interesting bit, though, is how Nintendo aims to encourage people to read the news posts in the Switch’s system UI. Nintendo writes these posts to alert users to sales, updates, system information, tutorials and whatever else they’ve cooked up.

Truth be told, they’re usually insightful reads done up with a touch of humor.

To encourage people to read them, Nintendo’s offering in-game rewards for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. “In-game items,” the notes read, “can now be obtained from launching the software from certain articles distributed through a new News channel (‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Tips from the Wild’) which can be accessed through News on the Home menu. [sic]”

So weird, right? Find the full notes below the gallery.

Version 1.3.1

  • We have fixed the issue in Pack 1: The Master Trials of the Expansion Pass, in which defeating certain enemies for Kilton was not counted toward completion when playing in Master Mode.
  • In-game items can now be obtained from launching the software from certain articles distributed through a new News channel (“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Tips from the Wild”) which can be accessed through News on the Home menu.
    • This channel is expected to open on 8/9/2017.
    • Depending on your game progress and location, certain items may not be obtainable.
  • Various fixes to improve gameplay.
