As we near the release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Sony’s dropped a video featuring some short interview clips from the developers at Naughty Dog.
The video itself is great, and it offers a perspective of moving away from Nathan Drake in order to embrace a new cast of characters. In fact, after an opening from Creative Director Shaun Escayg that offers that Drake’s story wrapped in Uncharted 4 and that they have a new motivation to find fresh central characters, Game Director Kurt Margenau says something interesting.
“Uncharted is more than just Nathan Drake,” Margenau explains. Margenau wants people thinking differently when they hear Uncharted, perhaps by adopting the mantra that the franchise is more than just Drake.
I’m not sure I’ll be able to get onboard with the notion, personally. It’s not that I think Naughty Dog is incapable of making a good game with Drake. That’s certainly not true. I just feel like an Uncharted without Drake is like an Indiana Jones without Dr. Jones. It sounds odd and, perhaps, empty.
I want to be wrong here. If I’m being honest, I think I will be wrong. Naughty Dog makes brilliant games, with or without Drake. I just hope the personality and charm Nathan Drake brought to the franchise will be filled by another character. If Uncharted: The Lost Legacy arrives with that charm intact, I’ll be perfectly happy.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy releases on August 22, 2017.
