Sharp’s new Aquos S2 is official, looks a lot like iPhone 8

Sharp today made its new Aquos S2 smartphone official, and if you’ve been keeping up with the iPhone 8 leaks, it’s going to look awfully familiar. The device boasts an edge-to-edge display with super-slim bezels, dual rear-facing cameras, and a gorgeous curved glass design.

The Aquos S2 isn’t quite as exciting as some rumors led us to believe it would be. It doesn’t carry a 4K display, and its screen cannot read your fingerprint. But it is a good-looking phone with a large display and beautifully slim bezels. It also comes in two variants with different specifications, so you can choose the one that best suits your budget.

One variant offers a Snapdragon 630 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage; the other offers a Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. Both have 5.5-inch IGZO displays with a Full HD (1080p) resolution, 12-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear-facing cameras, and a 3,020mAh battery.

Those rear-facing cameras are aligned vertically, just as we expect them to appear on the iPhone 8 this fall. Another similarity is the edge-to-edge screen, which, unlike Samsung’s and LG’s, extends to the top edge of the device beyond its front-facing camera. It’s also very similar to the display on the Essential Phone.

It’s not yet clear, however, whether the Aquos S2 will be gracing the United States. It will make its debut in China on August 14 with prices starting at around $372. We’ll have to wait and see whether Sharp has plans to reach more countries later.
