The Nintendo World Championships are back again this year, and Nintendo has officially announced the dates for both the qualifying rounds and the official Championship bout.

This could be you, friends. From the 1989 “classic” The Wizard. Yes, there was a movie about a fictional journey to the original Nintendo World Championships in 1990.

As for the modern era: The Nintendo World Championships Finals will go down on October 7, 2017, in New York City. They’ll be hosted at Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom.

Before that, players will be able to work their way up the ladder to partake in the tournament themselves. The open qualifiers will begin on August 19 in Best Buys scattered across the United States in eight separate locations.

Nintendo did up a chart of the locations, dates and times. Here’s a screenshot.

And here’s exactly what competitors will play during these qualifiers.

Players will be divided into two groups based on their age, and both groups will play Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. The first age group, 12 and Younger, will play as Mario on the Nintendo DS “Luigi’s Mansion” course using Standard Kart, Standard Wheels and Super Glider. The second age group, 13 and Older, will play as Bowser on the Game Boy Advance “Bowser Castle 1” course using Standard Kart, Standard Wheels and Super Glider. The player with the best Time Trial entry in each age group at the end of the two-day event at each location will qualify for the Nintendo World Championships 2017!

These Best Buys will host demo versions of Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns during these events, to boot. Those games look neat.

Good luck to the competitors!
