OnePlus 5 debuts in beautiful new color—but there’s a catch

After teasing its arrival, OnePlus on Monday officially unveiled the OnePlus 5 in “soft gold.” The device will be available for a limited time, according to OnePlus.

In an announcement post, OnePlus said gold is making its return by popular demand. The company also detailed the arduous process behind getting the color exactly right:

It takes an average of 180 days to create and perfect a coating of Soft Gold. Getting perfectly even and light color starts with running premium aluminum alloy through a diamond cutter. The surface is then sandblasted and polished with intense precision. Each second matters in this process, or the anodized color takes on a different shade. It’s an extensive process, but the result is worth it—a stunning matte finish is pleasing to see and feel.

Fans can purchase the device in a configuration with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which will retail for $479. OnePlus also said users can pick up the slate gray version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for $539. Previously, only the midnight black version was available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

It’s unclear how many units of the soft gold will be available. And, as a number of OnePlus fans have pointed out, there’s no gold option available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is disappointing. Perhaps that iteration will arrive down the road.
