A newly leaked image of the iPhone 8 is confirming our worst fears about the upcoming flagship device.
Since time immemorial – or at least since last September – rumors have been swirling about what will happen with the fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 8. Thanks to a newly leaked image we may finally know, and it isn’t the answer we were hoping for.
A new image has appeared on a Chinese forum that seems to show a Foxconn shopping box filled with iPhone 8 bodies. While not that exciting on the surface, it does show off a cut out just below the Apple logo on the rear that would presumably be the fingerprint scanner. If real, and there is never a way to tell with an image such as this, that means Apple was not able to get the technology working which would have embedded the reader under the screen.
The big question arising from this image is if it indeed is the iPhone 8. There is also a chance this could be the iPhone 7S or iPhone 7S Plus. With all of the rumors surrounding the iPhone 8 it’s easy to forget that there are two other phones on their way this year when Apple refreshes the line.
If this is indeed the iPhone 8, the fingerprint scanner may not be as big of a nuisance as we once feared, however. Thanks to the recent HomePod leak, we know facial tracking is at least being worked on. (Just because something is in the code does not automatically guarantee it’s active) If this is indeed what is happening, we may be able to avoid fumbling with an awkwardly placed fingerprint scanner altogether.
The iPhone 8, iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus are expected to be announced in September.
