It’s impossible to call any Dragon Quest game a “surprise success” for Square Enix, but Dragon Quest Builders was, indeed, just that. As a spin-off with obvious inspiration taken from Minecraft, some dismissed it as not being worth a second glance in the grand legacy of the series.
And yet, it sold over a million copies in Japan and even scored a round of nods as a Game of the Year contender in some publications, even those beyond Dragon Quest’s “Japan safety zone.” At the end of the day, it was a huge success that combined the traditional love for Dragon Quest with the modern infatuation with Minecraft.
So, naturally… it needs a sequel! Square Enix showed Dragon Quest Builders 2 off for the first time at its Dragon Quest Summer Festival 2017 this weekend, confirming it would be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
I’m excited. Dragon Quest Builders felt like a decent start, and with a few improvements, it could become something even better! Here’s to hoping Square Enix continues to localize the series for the West, like it is doing with Dragon Quest XI.
