If you think the retro 16-bit look used in Sonic Mania is something special, wait until you get a look at the game’s special stages. SEGA just released a new trailer detailing how to find and complete these throwback bonus levels, and man oh man, they are something else.
Tossing aside the 16-bit sprites, the developers instead turned to the early days of 3D to draw inspiration for these stages. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are rendered exactly how you would find them if you turned on an early CD-based game from the mid-90s.
The nod to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Special Stages is also a nice touch.
Sonic Mania is already one of the most exciting video games in the second half of 2017, and I didn’t think it could pile onto the hype any further. I was wrong, these special stages hit the mark perfectly!
Sonic Mania launches on Aug. 15 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
