Super Mario Odyssey gets highest ESRB rating mainline games have seen

What are our heroic plumber and cast up to in the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey that’s earned the game the highest rating a mainline Mario entry has ever seen? Granted, it’s not exactly banging down the door with an M rating, but Super Mario Odyssey has been stuck with an E10+.

That means that the ESRB, the United States-based ratings board, has determined that the game’s content is only suitable for players 10 and up.

Usually, these ratings are available on the ESRB’s website. It boasts a massive, searchable directory. It’s not there.

However, the rating badge is displayed directly on Nintendo of America’s official page for Super Mario Odyssey. We’ve posted that in the source section at the base of this article, for those who are curious.

What would earn Super Mario Odyssey that E10+ street cred? We’re not explicitly sure yet since the rating isn’t posted. However, here’s how the ESRB describes its E10+ rating:

Content is generally suitable for ages 10 and up. May contain more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal suggestive themes.

Cartoon violence? Suggestive themes? Alright, Mario. We see you.

Super Mario Odyssey will launch for the Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017.
