Metroid: Samus Returns’ grand revival is worth it just for the artwork

Metroid fans around the world are thrilled that Nintendo’s beloved series will be coming back to us in both Metroid: Samus’ Return this year and Metroid Prime 4 at some time in the future. After making a splash at E3 2017, Metroid: Samus Returns will be bringing back the classic 2D Metroid formula on Sept. 15.

The vote is still out on how snug it will fit the monstrous boots it has before it, but even if comes up short of its towering expectations, at least we’ve been able to get some sweet new Metroid art out of it. Oh man, Samus looks absolutely fabulous in these two pieces from Nintendo of Australia’s official Twitter account.

I’m approaching this game with a little skepticism, mostly because I think it’s being developed in a rush to counter the criticisms of Federation Forces and hold over fans until the main show of Metroid Prime 4 comes out, which I know is going to be quite a few years out.

Its art direction is solid, but the 3D models don’t quite compare to the sprites in Super Metroid or the Game Boy Advance games. I’m interested in seeing how it all works out, especially aiming with the stylus.

Metroid: Samus Returns will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on Sept. 15.
