We know Grand Theft Auto VI is in development the same way we know the sun is going to come up each day. It isn’t formally scheduled, but it’s gonna happen. But now we have what looks to be some confirmation that it’s pretty far under way.
Actor Tim Neff’s resume says that not only is he providing motion capture for the announced and highly-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2, but for Grand Theft Auto VI as well.
That sounds about right
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas hit in 2004, GTAIV in 2008, and GTAV in 2013. The company likes to put about four or five years between entries in the Grand Theft Auto series, so a Grand Theft Auto hitting in 2019 would give Red Dead Redemption 2 enough time to flex its muscle and still put the next GTA right on schedule. That they’re doing motion capture suggests the game is pretty deep into development, and that a lot of the mechanical bits of the game are nailed down.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to release sometime in Q2 of 2018 after a recent delay. I wouldn’t expect to hear a peep out of Rockstar about Grand Theft Auto VI until Red Dead is out of the stable and a ways into its life, though, as a GTA title is one of the few things that could conceivably cannibalize Red Dead‘s sales.
