HTC has started rolling out an update for the squeezable U11 in the United Kingdom. The upgrade transports support for Alexa, as well as an abundance of bug fixes and stability improvements, following its release in the United States last week.
The Alexa application for the U11 allows users to control smart home devices, schedule calendar events, purchase products from Amazon and receive answers to knowledge-based questions; however, there are a number of restrictions in place.
Alexa can’t access sensitive data
I received the upgrade on my U11 this morning and was surprised to learn that Alexa isn’t armed with the required permissions to access sensitive data stored on my device, so I couldn’t use it to add a new contact, place a call or send a text message.
Alexa did a fantastic job at controlling my Philips Hue lights, but seeing as Google Assistant can also connect to them — and do a whole lot more overall — I can’t see myself switching to Amazon’s mobile offering anytime soon.
Maybe you’ll feel differently.
