I love the Yakuza series. It’s especially been on my mind this year thanks to the release of Yakuza 0, a prequel to the entire saga. That game, even in the face of titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, NieR: Automata and more, is standing up as one of my favorites of 2017. It’s downright astounding.
Now, the original Yakuza that dropped for the PlayStation 2 is getting a remake in the form of Yakuza Kiwami. If you have never played this series before, watch the clip below. It touches on all of what makes it amazing.
Yakuza stands out for its excellent portrayal of Japan, its combat, its storyline, its side events and, good gravy, its minigames. This franchise is absurdly good when it comes to “open world” conventions and offerings.
The good news if you’re entirely new to Yakuza? Get Yakuza 0. Start there. It’s completely welcoming to new players. Then, play Yakuza Kiwami when it drops this August. You’ll have the prequel and the original down, and that adds up to more than 100 hours of gaming if you get into each game.
Which, hey, you will. These titles are awesome.
Yakuza Kiwami hits the PlayStation 4 on August 29, 2017.
