Dataminers have discovered some text in the 5.5.2 system update for the Wii U that seems to point towards the upcoming demise of the Miiverse, Nintendo’s odd social network for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
Dataminer Shiny Quagsire tweeted the following quote from the system update text. “The Miiverse service has ended,” it reads. “Miiverse and any software features that make use of Miiverse are now unavailable.”
Of course, this hasn’t happened yet. It’s possible that Nintendo’s simply laying the text framework for when they do pull the plug on Miiverse. It’s certainly routine for software updates to contain the seeds for future work, and it’s likely that Nintendo wasn’t considering dataminers when they made this update.
Miiverse has no home on the Nintendo Switch. The charming community lead to some ridiculous posts and usage, but it was also home to beautiful art work, unique announcements and an experience that felt entirely Nintendo-like.
The Miiverse was one of the best things to come from the Wii U. There, I said it.
