A new trailer for Blade Runner 2049 has dropped, and while it gives us some new clues to the plot, it’s still a bit of a mystery as to what exactly is going on.
What we know so far is K (Ryan Gosling) has been tasked with an assignment that he feels only Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a missing Blade Runner can help him with. Of course, Deckard was the focus of the original Blade Runner film released in 1982, and when we last saw him he was running away with the replicant Rachel (Sean Young), never to be seen again.
Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) is the director tasked with following up one of the most iconic sci-fi films of all time. He clearly has an eye for making this film feel like it exists in the same universe as the original, just 30 years later. (The original film was set in 2019, this one is in 2049.)
While this trailer sets up numerous mysteries such as who is chasing K and Deckard, the date on the tree intrigues me the most. “6 10 21,” the date of Rachel’s death perhaps? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters on Oct. 6.
