PSY’s “Gangnam Style” dethroned as YouTube’s top video

by Brandon Russell | July 12, 2017

After becoming YouTube’s first video to reach one billion views, PSY’s “Gangnam Style” is no longer the platform’s most popular video. That honor now goes to Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a song that debuted with the release of Furious 7 as an ode to actor Paul Walker, who died unexpectedly in 2013.

“Gangnam Style” held the top spot for nearly five years after blowing past Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” The song, released in the summer of 2012, was a satire of the lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul, South Korea. As of this writing, the song’s video has been viewed over 2.8 billion times.

But “See You Again” is currently ahead in the race to 3 billion, a mark that will undoubtedly be broken before the summer is up. Considering the incident at the heart of the song, it’s no surprise to see it become such a hit among fans.
