In Super Mario Odyssey, as this new gameplay reveals, you’ll only have access to certain areas if you’re wearing specific outfits. The video in question comes from Nintendo World Report, and it shows a space the Mario can only access if he’s wearing the Mario Maker outfit.
Here’s the vid.
The idea that you’ll have to unlock outfits in order to access parts of the game makes me even more cool with the disappearance of extra lives and this new use for in-game currency. In Super Mario Odyssey, when you die, you lose 10 coins instead of a life. Coins, both the normal and world-specific ones, are used to buy items and outfits.
Now, I’m not sure if you can get the Super Mario Maker outfit with normal coins. That might only be doable with the currency that’s found in New Donk City. However, encouraging players to explore and collect coins in order to unlock new spaces is completely new for a Mario game, and I sort of dig the idea that we’ll be pushed to experiment and look around.
Every video I watch of this game in motion reveals something new, and that is super exciting for someone who’s played Mario games since the very beginning.
Super Mario Odyssey will launch for the Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017. We’ll have more on the title as it comes.
