LG V30 expected to ship without a secondary display

LG’s V series of smartphones are famous for their secondary displays that show useful information when the handset is asleep. But according to a new report, that feature will not be making its way to the upcoming LG V30.

What’s great about the V series’ secondary screen is that it’s incredibly versatile. You can customize it to show things like the time and date when the handset is sleeping, and shortcuts to your favorite apps while the handset is in use. It can also be used to display incoming notifications, which prevents them from blocking content on the primary display.

It’s ideal for LG devices, which do not offer the same always-on display feature you’ll find on handsets like the Galaxy S8. That’s because LG uses LCD panels as opposed to OLED, and they’re not as power-efficient. LCD panels have a dedicated backlight that must be lit to display even small snippets of content, whereas OLED displays can light individual pixels.

But according to a report from XDA Developers, LG is making big changes for the V30, which almost certainly mean it won’t look anything like the beautiful concept you see above.

“According to a trusted source, the upcoming LG V30 will be ditching the secondary display,” reads the report. “On top of that, our source claims that the LG V30 will feature an OLED panel, which falls in line with many news reports we’ve been hearing about LG Display’s investments in the face of an increasing demand for OLED smartphone displays.”

It’s thought the V30 will also adopt the same 18:9 aspect ratio as the LG G6. As for its internal specifications, recent rumors have hinted at a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. The device could get its unveiling at IFA in September.
