Instagram releases a new feature to block offensive comments

Instagram has launched a new feature that it hopes will make offensive comments a thing of the past: automatic comment filtering.

The optional tool uses machine learning to detect abusive comments and prevent them from showing up on both traditional posts and live video.

“We’ve developed a filter that will block certain offensive comments on posts and in live video,” explains Instagram.

“All other comments will appear as they normally do and you can still report comments, delete comments or turn them off.”

Automatic comment filtering is currently only available for English-speaking users, but support will be added for eight more languages, including French and Spanish, in the near future.

The feature is a little rough around the edges

As you’d expect, the feature is a little rough around the edges, but the more it’s used, the better it will become at detecting and filtering abuse.
