Nintendo doesn’t like people saying Mario “possesses” enemies in Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey made a huge splash at E3 2017 this month by introducing a mechanic that’s brand new to the Mario franchise. Mario can toss his hat, named Cappy, at enemies and objects and take them over. Players will see Mario’s hat and mustache appear on whatever he now controls, and they’ll be able to move about.

The internet’s had some fun with this mechanic, mostly calling it “possession.” That is, Mario possesses other characters and objects. This image has been making the rounds, too, showing Kirby in Smash and this potentially “possessed” Kirby.

All that possession talk pushed Nintendo of America to respond and clarify.

Clearly, Nintendo would rather we didn’t illicit poltergeists and ghastly ghouls when referencing Mario and his “capturing” ability.

I think this clarification is hilarious.
