SEGA’s classics are now free-to-play through SEGA Forever on mobile platforms

SEGA’s latest noble initiative is to simply hand out its entire classic library for absolutely free. You’ve already paid for Altered Beast and Gain Ground more times than you care to admit, but SEGA Forever hopefully means you’ll never have to pay for them again. With the app, SEGA’s classics will be free-to-play and powered by ads while you enjoy.

The app will add modern extremities like save states for games that didn’t originally have them and wireless controller support through Bluetooth. As for games, SEGA Forever will start with a selection of five games, and new games will be added every two weeks. The library hopes to encompass all the titles from the SEGA Master System up until the Dreamcast, including both the Genesis and Saturn days as well.

Pretty much the classic era of SEGA before it dropped out of the home console business. I can dig it. The first five games include Sonic the Hedgehog and a few other worthy titles… and Altered Beast.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Altered Beast
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Comix Zone

Oh man, Phantasy Star II is so awesome. You kids are in for a rude awakening if you think you know the ropes of all that JRPGs have to offer. If SEGA is dealing with Phantasy Star II, then this also means we might get the Shining Force games also. Yes, please!

If you don’t want to see ads, each game will set you back $1.99 just to make them go away.

Above all else SEGA Forever is a celebration of nostalgia. It’s about allowing fans to reconnect with past experiences and share them with family and friends in an accessible and convenient way. Join us on a journey of rediscovery as we roll out two decades of classic games free on mobile. Create your own ‘SEGA Forever folder’ and collect your favorite classics. Enjoy moments of nostalgia on the go, or sync a Bluetooth controller to enjoy a console-like experience in your living room. SEGA Forever democratizes retro gaming, and seeks to change how the world plays, rediscovers, and shares in classic game experiences.
