Final Fantasy creator returns to game development with an announcement this week

Final Fantasy creator and current boss of Mistwalker Studio Hironobu Sakaguchi is making a much-anticipated return to the video game world this week with the announcement of a new game. The announcement will be made alongside Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu and other guests on June 22 at 8:00 pm JST or 4:00 am PT.

To prep for the announcement, Sakaguchi teased his fans with new images of the characters in his game. His female lead Sara, a host of mysterious triplets, and what appears to be some kind of dragon zombie god monster thing all will appear in this game.

We’re still waiting for the platform

The return of Hironobu Sakaguchi to game development is a victory for all in the JRPG world. The only question that remains is what platform it will be coming to, consoles or mobile phones. Mistwalker has not made a console game since 2011 when it developed The Last Story for the Nintendo Wii. It also gained fame before that with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360.

After all three games failed to make the impact on consoles that Mistwalker needed, Sakaguchi found great success in his free-to-play mobile game Terra Battle.

Whether the new game comes to consoles ( Switch please!) or it comes to mobile phones, I’ll be the first in line to try it out. Expect the announcement within a few days.
