Blade Strangers is a fighting game that stars your favorite niche heroes

This one is a bit weird, but it’s also exciting if you love niche Japanese games. Created in collaboration between Nicalis and Studio Saizensen, of Code of Princess and Sayonara Umihara Kawase fame, Blade Strangers takes the idea of Super Smash Bros. and sets it to a collaboration of fighters from the nichiest of niche games from Japan.

Studio Saizensen’s own characters from Code of Princess will appear in the game, and since it owns the license to the classic Umihara Kawase, its titular heroine will also be coming along for the ride. Finally, the last character Nicalis was able to confirm that appears in the game is Curly, the lady robot from the indie classic Cave Story.

Nicalis did confirm that more characters appear in the game, but it was unable to reveal any further. As you can see in the footage below, it’s a very basic fighting game with quick, tight action and plenty of strategy for how to approach combat. Guilty Gear comes to mind with how the 3D characters are rendered to look like they are made in 2D.

Nicalis claims that it finds a balance between Guilty Gear’s intricacies and Super Smash Bros. ease of entry. I like what I see. It looks like a solid little competitive fighter I’d love to put on my Switch and I’ll play anything that stars Umihara Kawase. I only wonder what other niche characters Studio Saizensen has been able to score for its roster.

Might I suggest LA MULANA 2’s heroine, Lumisa?

Blade Strangers will be released for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. No release date yet.
