Code Vein does its best Dark Souls impression in latest gameplay footage

Bandai Namco isn’t going to be putting out a new Dark Souls game anytime soon now that From Software has moved on. To fill in the gap, it instead turned to an internal studio to make the new vampire RPG called Code Vein. During E3 2017, we got to see the title in action for the very first time.

And yup, it’s trying its best to fill in Dark Souls’ enormous shoes. Slow enemies, patient combat, dodges, rolls, and waiting for that perfect moment to strike, everything you see in Dark Souls, this game is trying to copy.

All except for the character faces, of course. Those are totally aiming for the anime audience.

Code Vein looks fine so far, but with the obvious ties to Dark Souls, I wonder if expectations are going to be a little too high for this unproven IP. I hope it’s up to the task because it looks like a solid action RPG in its own right.

Code Vein will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018.
