How is this possible? How is it possible that the best game we’ve seen so far this year is a title I was scoffing about when it leaked a month or so ago?
The most exciting game revealed at E3 2017 so far in my book (and the shared books between at least our own Ron Duwell) is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. A Ubisoft game, a weird third-party Mario title and one that offers an odd take on mechanics that are brand new to the series.
Just, look at this thing…
This is a Mario game that’s been invaded by Ubisoft’s iconic Rabbids. That means it has a completely new layer of goofy humor over its gorgeous exterior. It does look pretty good, too, doesn’t it?
The mechanics are really what set it apart, though. There’s a bit of running around and cutscenes in the trailer that debuted alongside the game. That all looks fine, but it’s the actual combat that is outstanding. It’s like XCOM, quite frankly.
You’ll see a touch of it in this clip.
Now, jump to the 7:30 mark in this clip to see even more quality gameplay.
Honestly, this game looks better than it has any right to. A Mario game made by Ubisoft sounds like a recipe for disaster. It’s entirely possible that this thing could be a mess come launch, but right now? Right now it looks stellar.
We still have the Nintendo show to go today, so we could see a few more stunning games. Here’s a guarantee we can make here: one of the best games at E3 will definitely involve Nintendo. It’s either going to be Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle or something Nintendo shows off. Stay tuned.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle will launch on August 29, 2017.
