Sony thinks you’ll buy a PS4 and a Nintendo Switch

Sony thinks they’ll be able to live in harmony with the Nintendo Switch. Sort of like peanut butter and jelly or jazz and a cup of coffee. They seem to think that the consoles and complement one another in households around the world, instead of squaring off as competition.

When talking with TIME about the death of home consoles, which he noted is premature, Sony global game development boss Shawn Layden spoke of harmony with the Nintendo Switch.

“When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side.”

Don’t mistake me here… I think Layden is right, though I’d say the same for Nintendo and either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Anecdotally speaking, if I didn’t have the cash for all three platforms, I’d pick either the PS4 or Xbox One and then definitely the Nintendo Switch.

I know that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have their own unique exclusives, and I get that those titles separate the two platforms. However, in a purely traditional sense, the PS4 and Xbox One are more home console-like than the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo always steps up with the offbeat experience that feels far more separate from the PS4 and Xbox One.

Consider me among those two console families Layden mentions.
