Honda surprised us all when it unveiled the Civic Type-R. Amidst the hype, Honda was open about its specifications and power but mum on pricing. Thanks to some intrepid reporters on a Civic forum, we finally know exactly what the Type-R will cost, and it ain’t cheap.
CivicX forum user ZdH published some photos of a few Civic Type-Rs at a loading dock where they were being transported to Honda dealers and one of those photos was that of a window sticker. The starting price of the Type-R will be cool $34,775.
The price is somewhat controversial given how pricey it is but doesn’t come with all-wheel drive like other comparable options in this segment. It’s about $2,000 cheaper than its main competition with the VW Golf R, Ford Focus RS and Subaru WRX STi, but all of those come equipped with all-wheel drive instead of the Type-R’s front-wheel drive.
Within its own family, it’s the most expensive Civic you can buy. The other comparable sporty models like the Civic Si ($23,900) and Civic Sport Touring Hatchback ($28,300) are significantly cheaper.
As long as you know what you’re purchasing with your money this shouldn’t be a difficult decision to make. What you do get for that price is a beefy 2.0-liter turbo engine capable of 306 horsepower. But its mean design truly rounds out the purchase.
Honda went all out with the design including an aggressive front grill, a gigantic rear spoiler, a hood scoop and enormous 20-inch black wheels. That, along with red Brembo caliper brakes, red-accented leather interior and triple back exhaust—you will not be ignored with the Civic Type-R. And that’s exactly why you spend $34,775 on it.
