Niantic is dancing around the idea of a rebuffed Pokémon GO experience for its one-year anniversary this summer. The word “legendary” has popped up here and there, and the frequent global events suggest that the company now has a handle on how to work on a schedule. However, in spite of all these pieces falling into place, Niantic hasn’t officially said a word about its plans.
Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Niantic Mathieu de Fayet recently opened up some of the potential ideas the company is prepping in an interview with Brazilian newspaper O Globo. In the interview, Fayet suggests that both Legendary Pokémon and PVP will be playable before the summer is finished.
Due to the large success of the game, we had to delay some planned innovations. Right now we are working on some that are due to hit this summer (in the northern hemisphere), such as giving more value to the choice of the teams, releasing Legendary Pokémon and introducing PvP. One thing we learned with Ingress was that the game can sustain itself if we are able to create social interactions amongst players, and we are working on that.
PvP might turn Pokémon GO into a real game!
The biggest criticism I read about Pokémon GO is that there really isn’t all that much “game” to it. Collecting Pokémon revolves around a simple toss mechanic, and the combat in gyms is pretty barebones with its taps and dodges. While I doubt the combat will be overhauled, straight up battling your friends directly could add the much-needed layer of depth that many are searching for in the game.
Legendary Pokémon would just be a bit of icing. PvP is the future of Pokémon GO and the next step in its dominance over our world.
