Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 will get Android O

The latest lineup of Nokia smartphones will be getting Google’s latest Android O upgrade. HMD Global, the company responsible for manufacturing new handsets under the Nokia brand, has confirmed the update will be coming after Google makes it available to its partners. It also vows to roll out monthly security patches.

Announced back in February at Mobile World Congress, the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 are yet to actually go on sale. However, Nokia has promised that we’ll be able to buy them worldwide before the end of June — and those who do will have a nice Android O upgrade to look forward to.

HMD hasn’t confirmed exactly when Android O will be available to these devices; it told TechRadar that it will be rolled out “once the new release is available from Google for their OEM partners” — which is expected to happen around September or October.

This suggests users will get it soon after it is made available on Google’s own Pixel smartphones, but don’t get your hopes up just yet. HMD’s software is close to stock Android, which means it won’t have a great deal of work to do — but there are plenty of other factors to take into account when it comes to third-party Android upgrades.

It might seem obvious that the new Nokia lineup would get Android O at some point; they are brand new handsets, after all. But nothing is guaranteed — particularly when it comes to more affordable devices — so this should provide peace of mind to those planning to pickup a Nokia 3, Nokia 5, or Nokia 6 later this month.
