Andy Rubin’s Essential has something big planned for May 30

It looks as though Andy Rubin is prepared to wow the smartphone community again and we only have to wait until next week to find out how.

Andy Rubin, co-founder of Android, left Google in 2014 leaving many to wonder what he would do next. In January we learned of his new company, Essential, and his plans for an edgeless smartphone with AI-capabilities. Then he teased us in March with a sly shot of what the phone may look like.

Now it appears things are really about to take off. Essential posted its first tweet on Thursday.

This was followed up a bit later with a second tweet that gives us a shadowy image of a phone in someone’s hand.

The hump on the top is, of course, the main thing that has us curious. Could it be for AR? Maybe a 360-degree camera? We don’t know yet, but we’re also hoping its detachable. (It has to be.) A previous story from Bloomberg had said there would be a magnetic connector for accessories, and our suspicion is we now know where that goes.

May 30 isn’t that far away and we can’t wait to see what Andy Rubin and his team at Essential have planned for us.
