Microsoft’s new Surface Pro leaks out ahead of May 23 reveal

Microsoft’s updated Surface Pro has leaked out ahead of its official reveal on May 23. The popular 2-in-1 looks identical to the existing model and is expected to retain exactly the same name, so forget a fancy new design and USB-C connectivity.

To be fair to Microsoft, the Surface Pro 4 is already a stellar machine. You can’t really fault its design — though USB-C connectivity in place of the Surface Connect port would be nice — so the company has no need to mess with it just yet. The new Surface Pro 4, according to the ever-reliable Evan Blass (@evleaks), will instead bring internal improvements alongside refreshed accessories.

“It’s very much a “tock” release, to use terminology commonly associated with S-branded Apple iPhone models,” Blass explains for VentureBeat. “As optional accessories, the pen and keyboard — will be available in a choice of four colors similar — but not identical — to the recently-launched Surface Laptop’s palette.”

As you can see in the images above, the Surface Pen will soon be available in black, blue, and red, while the Type Cover will also be available in a new shade of blue — and presumably the new red as well.

An April report had already warned us that the next Surface Pro would carry the same design as its predecessor — and the same Surface Connect port. It’s thought that upgrades will include Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processors with faster performance and improved graphics, but “nothing dramatic.”

We’ll find out more about the device on May 23 when Microsoft is scheduled to host a Surface event in Shanghai. Blass, citing sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, says that a new Surface Book won’t be making an appearance.
