Sam Raimi and more directors have passed on The Flash movie

No matter how fast he moves, it seems the Flash isn’t fast enough to keep directors from jumping ship or even getting on in the first place. It seems like the cinematic debut of DC’s speedster is in trouble.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Sam Raimi and Marc Webb, both of whom have directed Spider-Man films, have passed on a chance to direct the movie, as did Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn. Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Cast Away) is the front-runner right now. Seth Grahame-Smith was the first director attached to the movie, followed by Rick Famuiywa (Dope), who left over creative differences.

Zemeckis could be a huge win for the DCEU as a director with experience on big productions and some very well-liked movies. He could actually get things done. If DC and Warner Brothers back off and let him direct the movie, instead of just attaching his name to it while executives make the decisions.

And another bites the dust

EW also reports that the movie has lost a cast member: Billy Crudup. Crudup was set to play the Flash/Barry Allen’s father, Henry Allen. In fact, he’d already filmed scenes for Justice League, and even appeared in the Justice League trailer that came out in March. DC and Warner Brothers are either going to have to re-cast and re-shoot some scenes or cut the character from the movie entirely. Other sources are saying he is still attached, so there is some definite confusion going on.

Henry Allen’s imprisonment is a big driver in The Flash’s quest for justice, so removing him from the character’s world seems like a bad idea. Similarly, though, Justice League is set to hit in November – just six months out. Reshooting could be tough, too.

All of these departures come together to make The Flash look like a very troubled movie. It’s going to come out one way or another, but it’s hard to imagine right now that it’ll be good. And as a big Flash fan, that worries me.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17.
