The Mist’s new trailer is gory and haunting

Early-to-mid-1980s Stephen King is a busy guy right now. 1982’s The Dark Tower and his 1986 novel It are both going to be in theaters in August and September respectively. But before those movies even get a chance to hit the big screen, another one of his stories, The Mist, will be making its way to television via Spike. And in case you were worried the show might tone things down for television when compared to something like It, this gory new trailer should make you happy. Or scared, depending on how you feel about King’s stories.

I bet you can’t guess where it takes place

Stephen King has a bunch of tropes he likes to go back to time and time again, and the description for the show lays them pretty bare:

“A small town family is torn apart by a brutal crime. As they deal with the fallout, an eerie mist rolls in, suddenly cutting them off from the rest of the world and, in some cases, each other. Family, friends and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain morality and sanity as the rules of society break down.”

While I can’t find anything that confirms the show takes place in Maine, the original story and 2007 adaptation of the movie both did, so it seems likely. And as with stories like ItTommyknockers, and so many others, a supernatural evil is invading a small coastal town and revealing the true, barely-veiled natures of its inhabitants.

Even though it’s a bit trope-y as far as King’s stories go, the Mist concept is a fun one, and the trailer suggests we’re in for a good time. This might be one of my most-anticipated shows of the summer right now. The Mist is set to hit Spike on Thursday, June 22.
