Splatoon 2 will offer shorter map rotation length, but we’re wondering why it has that at all

You might be new to Splatoon with Splatoon 2 on the Nintendo Switch. It’s a brilliant game, and I definitely encourage everyone new to the experience to give it a shot.

One thing you won’t like? The game rotates maps two at a time for the entire multiplayer community. The original had them up for four hours at a time, so those were the only maps you could play over that span. That’s changing in Splatoon 2.

Here’s Producer Hisashi Nogami speaking with EDGE on the new map rotation length for Splatoon 2.

“In Splatoon 2, the maps rotate every two hours, so it’ll be a much faster cycle than the previous game.”

This is great news, for sure. Seeing more new maps at a faster clip is great for those who only game in relatively short spurts or sessions. But that brings us to the even larger question at hand?

Why limit the maps to two at a time, anyways?

To answer that question, here’s Nogami again.

“We feel that part of the gameplay is actually selecting which weapons would be best for that combination of two maps…”

I… I guess so? I get what Nogami’s trying to indicate here. The team feels that one of Splatoon‘s best assets is its weapons and how they play uniquely for each map players need to drench with ink. I just think they’re missing the common notion that players want at least some degree of freedom to choose what they want to play, when.

Heck, maybe not even give us a choice. Overwatch rotates all of its maps all the time, and that system works wonderfully.

Splatoon 2 will hit the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2017.
