Nissan has found an ingenuous way to combat distracted driving

Nissan unveiled a new concept called the Signal Shield, which is designed to prevent drivers from being distracted by their phones. The Signal Shield is based on the design of a Faraday Cage, which blocks electric fields. This means if a phone is inside of it, it won’t be able to receive cellular signal.

The concept will be placed in the compartment between the seats of the Nissan Juke. Drivers can place their phone in the compartment to eliminate the distraction of receiving text messages or notifications while driving. If drivers do need to use their phone, they can just open the compartment and their phone will work normally. While their device is in the Signal Shield, drivers can still listen to music through the USB or AUX connection.

Safety always comes first

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, eight people are killed and over 1,000 are injured due to distracted drivers every day. The Signal Shield puts safety first and gives drivers a more convenient method to stop using their phones while driving.

I’m not sure how many people would use this compartment if it was in their car, but it’s still cool of Nissan to think of ways to combat distracted driving. It would then be up to the drivers to make the conscious decision to disconnect.
