The last writer who worked on a Half-Life game has left Valve

Chet Failszek, writer and VR ambassador for Valve, has left the company.

If you’re a PC gamer or a fan of Valve’s games, you know Faliszek’s work. He’s worked on two Half-Life episodes, both Portal games, and both Left 4 Dead titles. With Valve having backed away from making games, though, Faliszek’s activities shifted to advocating for virtual reality. He showed up regularly at conferences to speak about VR, and GamesIndustry‘s report on Faliszek’s departure includes testimony from a few different members of the VR community. According to Julie Heyde of VR Unicorns, Faliszek has played a big role in helping developers to make good roomscale VR games.

Faliszek says the departure wasn’t a dramatic one.

“I worked there 12 years, shipped a bunch of great games and some amazing hardware, and wanted to change things up. There’s no news on what’s next… I will let you know when that happens,” Faliszek told GamesIndustry.

Faliszek’s departure comes on the heels of other Valve writers like Erik Wolpaw and Marc Laidlaw, who left in February 2017 and January 2016 respectively. Laidlaw was the sole writer on the first two Half-Life games, and Wolpaw worked on the Half-Life episodes, Portal games, and first Left 4 Dead with Faliszek. Faliszek himself was the last writer at Valve who’d worked on a Half-Life title.

Three game series? Three writers? Three departures?

Half-Life 3 confirmed! No, not really. It’s hard to say if this is the death knell for Half-Life 3, or if it died years ago, but it sure seems to snuff out any lingering hope. Wolpaw is now working on Psychonauts 2. Faliszek could end up writing games, too, though his work in VR seems to lend him to working on something like Oculus Rift or Microsoft’s HoloLens hardware, too.

Between writing some of our favorite games and playing an instrumental role in making VR work, though, I’m eager to see where he ends up, because he’s definitely going to do something interesting.
